Wellsford School has been a huge part of the community since the school was originally built in 1875 and was moved to the School Road site in 1911. It was used as a school until 1990, when students relocated to Wellsford Primary School further down the road and the Ministry of Education sold the site.
We are a growing school with a roll of over 350 students from New Entrants to Year 8. We have a diverse cultural mix of students who are motivated and keen to be actively involved in their learning. We enjoy the committed support of our community and we learn and grow together.
We have an aspirational culture with a belief in holistic education (developing the whole child). Our key priority is to empower our tamariki so they have the skills and active learning traits to be life-long learners and positive citizens.

Our modern, rural school is positioned south of the Wellsford Township on the Kaipara Coast Highway, surrounded by fields and close to the community hall. We are currently classified as a U2, decile 6 school with 3 classrooms operating. Our current roll is at 50.
The majority of students at Tauhoa School transition to Rodney College at the end of Year 8 and utilise the technology facilities at the College during their Year 7 and 8 years. Pre-school children transferring into Tauhoa School come from a range of backgrounds, many who have attended the pre-school learning centres in the local township.
Our school is staffed by one principal, three full time teachers, a reading recovery teacher, teacher aides, an office administrator, a cleaner and a grounds person. All the support staff work part time of varying degrees.
Our school offers the mix of a technology-based world alongside the rural strengths of community, family and learning to create a learning experience second to none.
New footbridge opens in Wellsford
Rodney Local Board Chair Brent Bailey says this footpath link is important to the Wellsford community who have waited a long time for safer pedestrian access across town.
“Footpaths are a priority for our local board and community who want to expand the network, and connect our residents to workplaces, schools and sports facilities.
“Our Wellsford community can now walk easily and safely from the town centre to businesses, the preschool and Centennial Park. For many years, they had to cross the state highway to get to the other side of town.”
Funded by the Rodney Transport Targeted Rate with a contribution from Waka Kotahi / NZ Transport Agency, the footpath and bridge took 10 months to build at a cost of $3.9 million.
The project’s biggest challenge was installing the 76-tonne concrete beam for the overbridge in June which required two cranes and an overnight road closure.
